1% for the Planet

Desert Provisions was born from a love and deep appreciation for the Desert Southwest and overall love for the outdoors.

While arid and hot, the desert has been feeding people and animals for thousands of years, but there’s no mistake that the climate is rapidly changing due to human impact. 

Our mission is to share the bounty of this incredible region while preserving its rich habitat. Safeguarding our heritage means taking bold actions to ensure our land, vegetation, and inhabitants are protected. It comes as no surprise that today, our precious desert faces many challenges. Drought, climate change and over-development have devastating impacts on our planet. It is our commitment to do everything in our power to protect this cherished region and be a good stewards of the land. 

We can and must do better. 

We are proud members of 1% for the Planet, pledging 1% of sales to the preservation, stewardship, and restoration of the natural environment. It is a first step in a much larger strategic plan for Desert Provisions, which we will continue sharing with you along our journey. 

We might be small, but we are mighty. We take environmental and social responsibility seriously and have big plans to make the world a better place, one pinch of salt at a time.  

Why 1% for the Planet? There are so many worthy and deserving non-profit organizations. We chose to join 1% for the Plant to publicly commit and pledge our support to safeguarding the environment and acknowledge the deeply interconnected network on our planet. Without regions, microclimates, and the terroir (the special elements in the natural environment that make the soil and land just right) that enable the products we offer to grow, where would we be?  

About 1% for the Planet

1% for the Planet brings dollars and doers together to accelerate smart environmental giving.

1% for the Planet is a global movement inspiring businesses and individuals to support environmental solutions through annual membership and everyday actions. 1% for the Planet consists of more than 1,200 member businesses, numerous individuals, and thousands of nonprofit partners in more than 40 countries.

The foundation of the 1% for the Planet network is the member-nonprofit partnership. Our business and individual members engage directly with approved nonprofit partners, providing financial donations, volunteer time, in-kind donations, and other shared-value collaborations. Thriving partnerships help deliver longer-term support and greater impact. Foundation members have given more than $150 million back to environmental nonprofits since 2002

1% for the Planet was started in 2002 by Yvon Chouinard (founder of Patagonia) and Craig Mathews (founder of Blue Ribbon Flies). Both successful entrepreneurs, they recognized the power of collective action to protect the environment. Today, businesses and individuals continue to make the 1% for the Planet commitment, creating greater impact every year.
