Desert Provisions Spicy Hot Cocoa (Dairy-free)
Warm up this winter with a dairy-free hot cocoa - Desert Provisions style! We made this using cashew milk, cocoa, brown sugar, a pinch of cinnamon and Hatch Red Chile Powder to spice things up, but you could easily use coconut milk too. Skip the dairy (and extra calories) and indulge in this sweet and spicy treat with just 5 ingredients! Since we’re only using a few ingredients in this recipe, we recommend using the highest quality ingredients you can find or afford. Fresh spices and ingredients go a long way in making simple recipes shine! We’re sure this recipe will warm you up and get you into a festive holiday spirit during the colder months.
Takes: 10 minutes
Serves 2-4
4 cups cashew milk
¼ cup Dutched Cocoa Powder
¼ cup brown sugar
Pinch of ground cinnamon
Sprinkle of Desert Provisions Hatch Red Chile Powder
Marshmallows (optional)
Slowly warm up the cashew milk over low heat in a medium sized saucepan. Add cocoa powder and brown sugar; whisk to fully combine. Make sure the cocoa powder and brown sugar fully dissolves. Continue to slowly warm until desired temperature, but don’t let it boil. Pour into mugs, top with marshmallows, and sprinkles of cinnamon and Desert Provisions Hatch Red Chile Powder!
Cook's notes: We used cashew milk for this recipe, but you can easily sub out for your favorite milk alternative like coconut or oat milk. Just remember to slowly heat the milk to prevent it from scalding. We also used Dutched Cocoa Powder, which is milder in flavor, but this recipe can also be made with good ol’ natural cocoa powder too!
We won’t tell if you opt to make this an adult beverage by adding a nip of whiskey in your mug after adding the hot cocoa.
